This ranch is a fifth generation, working cattle ranch lying in the Clarks Fork Valley, between the Pryor Mountains and the
Beartooth Mountains. Guest are invited to join in the daily work (varies depending on season): branding and trailing the cattle
to summer pastures, moving the herd from one area to another, checking water holes and fences. Roping and team penning
are always a favorite past time! While vacationing at ranch, guests are also given the opportunity to partake in a variety of
activities including viewing the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, touring Buffalo Bill Museum (entrance fee extra) in Cody,
reliving the Battle of the Little Big Horn, experiencing the scenic Beartooth Highway, shop in quaint Red Lodge and visit a real
"whoop um up" rodeo (extra fee), depending on the season. Lonnie and Darlene Schwend will go the extra way to make you
feel like a member of the family! Lonnie is a past bareback and bull riding champion and was quite respected as a steer
wrestler in the NRA circuit. He enjoys sharing with the guests many of his adventures and explaining what is "really" taking
place during the rodeos!
Also, Nicholas Evans spent a few days here while preparing his now famous book "The Horse Whisperer". And while the
ranch in the book is pure fiction you can clearly see that he modeled it after the Lonesome Spur Ranch. And you will see a lot
of Lonnie’s family history in the book! And everybody who knows her recognizes Darlene in the sister-in-law and Lonnie in
the brother. You know what? See for yourself (by the way, you’ll find Lonnie’s and Darlene’s name mentioned in the front of
the book...). Just one hint: don’t expect to meet Robert Redford while staying at the ranch.....!
