There is no better place to explore the legacy of the western frontier and a real ranch experience than at Sun Rock Ranch.
3,000 acres situated on the western edge of the Kansas Flint Hills, this authentic working horse and cattle ranch is a family
owned operation that welcomes guests with an informal and friendly environment.
The ranch was built in 1877 and is nestled near historic Fort Riley and Junction City. Junction City was founded in 1859 at
the junction of two rivers by a culturally diverse group of settlers. Fort Riley was founded in 1852 in "Indian Territory" (as
Kansas was known back then) to provide military protection from Indian raids for emigrating pioneers and settlers. The 10th
Calvary Buffalo soldiers and the 7th Calvary were among those troops trained and stationed here before being dispatched
to the frontier west.
Even though they do not have to worry about Indian raids after a century and a half, guests might still feel their spirits while
horseback riding on the same open prairies and trails used by Indians and pioneers alike. You can even spot original Indian
tree markings and ruts carved into the native stone from wagon trains. There are remains of pioneer homesteads found
throughout the ranch for guests to explore.
Because the ranch caters only to a few guests at a time , they are able to provide a very personalized experience for
each guest. Families and individuals are encouraged to participate in virtually every ranch activity, depending on guest ability
and interest.
Normal ranch activities include working cattle and imprinting newborn foals (hands-on TLC for new babies), depending on
the season. These activities can be a fun and educational addition to any vacation.
For guests who prefer to take it easy and just wind down from city living, the tranquil surroundings of the ranch are just
what you need.
In addition to morning and afternoon horseback rides, fishing is available at any of the 5 ranch ponds or guests may decide to
take a trip to nearby Milford Lake (the largest lake in Kansas).
