Yosemite National Park - located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of central California - is a setting so spectacular and
awe-inspiring that even the first non-native visitors realized it should be protected for all time. John Muir, naturalist and Sierra
Club founder, called it "a landscape...that after all my wanderings still appears as the most beautiful I have ever beheld."
Earthquakes, glaciers and other forces of nature over millions of years left indelible footprints on the landscape that are still
visible in the towering granite cliffs, thundering waterfalls, steep mountains and deep alpine lakes. They beckon visitors to
explore, climb, photograph and experience their grandeur.
This land is so majestic and magnificent that it was the first territory ever set aside by Congress for public use and protection
in 1864. However, it took another thirty-six years and the efforts of Muir, Theodore Roosevelt and other influential
conservationists to bring all the lands of today's Yosemite National Park under federal protection. On October 1, 1890, the
U.S. Congress set aside more than 1,500 square miles of reserved forest lands, soon to be known as Yosemite National
Park. Today 94.5% of the park's 1,170 square mile area is dedicated as true wilderness for all who visit to enjoy.
Grand, Elegant, Majestic.
The Ahwahnee Hotel is a National Historical Landmark and one of the most distinctive resort hotels in North America. It's well
known for its great granite façade, striking beamed ceilings, massive stone hearths, richly colored Native American
appointments, and finely appointed rooms. Named for the original Native word for Yosemite Valley, the Ahwahnee Hotel
offers a perfect balance of refinement, grandness and hospitality. It's no wonder that for generations this grand hotel has
been the destination of queens and presidents alike.
Ahwahnee Hotel
According to legend, Lady Astor, American-born and England's first female Member of Parliament, visited the Yosemite
Valley in the early 1920s. She registered at its venerable Sentinel Hotel but was horrified when she saw her unheated room
and primitive amenities. She promptly checked out and returned to town. In response, Stephen T. Mather, director of the
National Parks Service, ordered the Yosemite Park & Curry Co., Yosemite's concessionaire, to replace the Sentinel with a
first-class hotel. Although The Ahwahnee Hotel is grand, it has only 123 rooms which means the staff can provide
first-class hospitality and care to each guest. Every room is finely appointed for comfort and visual delight and reflects the
natural surroundings and Native American influence of Yosemite.
There are 99 rooms in the main building, 24 cottage rooms and 4 luxurious parlor rooms -- with either a king-size or two
double beds, upholstered chairs, television, guest bathrobes, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, and daily housekeeping
service and evening turndown.
Hotel Rooms
Hotel rooms in the main building are appointed in rich fabrics, warm woods and Native American motifs. They offer
exceptional views of Yosemite Valley's spectacular scenery including Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and Glacier Point.
