What is Lake Powell? Lake Powell is what legends are made of in a land of mystery and natural beauty. History tells us that

in 1869 while navigating the 200 miles between Cataract Canyon and Lees Ferry, Major John Wesley Powell named the area

Glen Canyon. Spurred by Indian reports in 1909 of a rainbow turned to stone, teams of scholars led by Indians discovered

Rainbow Bridge. Today, it is entirely possible to experience the same wonder the early explorers felt when they first saw

Glen Canyon. You will see the colorful rock layers that rise above the lake’s surface. The desert comes right to the edge of

the lake because fluctuating lake levels prevent plant growth along the shore. Look for bobcats and mountain lion, bighorn

sheep and ground squirrels frolicking among the cacti and rabbitbrush. Breathe in the fresh desert air as you gaze out over

the crystal indigo water of the lake that reaches out to caress the fiery orange cliffs. Everywhere you rest your eye a

thrilling sight waits to fill you with its vitality. Feel the Arizona sun pounding on your skin. Let it warm you to the very center

of your being, then plunge into the giant sapphire that lies at your feet. That is Lake Powell. If adventure is on your mind take

out a speedboat to explore Lake Powell with its 1960 miles (=3136 km) of spectacular shoreline! A full day of fun lets you

cruise deep into the narrow canyons and stop at isolated beaches to cool of in the crystal-clear waters.
