| Fourteen centuries of history are gloriously displayed at Mesa Verde National Park, a world center for exploring the ancient |
| culture of the ancestral Pueblo people. Established by Congress in 1906, Mesa Verde is the first national park set aside to |
| preserve the work of humankind. Mesa Verde was also designated as a World Heritage Cultural Park in 1978. It offers and |
| unparalleled opportunity to see and experience the life of ancestral Pueblos. Spectacular cliff dwellings and numerous |
| mesa-top villages were built between AD 600 and 1300, during which time the population may have reached nearly twice |
| that of modern-day Montezuma County. The park contains three wilderness areas and abounds with wildlife. You may catch |
| a fleeting glimpse of an elk, bobcat, deer, bighorn sheep, or mountain lion. Eagles and hawks are often seen soaring over |
| the park’s north rim, while the sight of peregrine falcons is a rare treat. The plant life is a unique blend of species found in |
| mountain and desert regions. |
