To be honest, Glacier National Park is reason enough to come to this part of Montana. Maximize your experience by taking a

three-day/two-nights guided hike into the back country! Arriving the day before, we recommend you spend the night in

Kalispell. If you have a chance, call or stop in at the office in West Glacier, you can often meet your guide and ask those last

minute questions. He or she will probably be busy getting ready for your trip, but they will always be happy to say "hi" and

check you in. By now, your trip's itinerary has been selected and the necessary backcountry permit obtained. So you will

now know exactly where you're going.

The next morning, you will meet at the office at 8:30 and complete your check-in. Your guide will be available to help you

pack, adjust your equipment and get it loaded into the van. On the shuttle ride to the trailhead, your guide will fill you in on

procedures and precautions to observe. Depending on the timing, you may have lunch before starting; other times, you'll lay

down some miles before breaking to eat.

On the trail, your guide will point out features of interest, identify the flora and the fauna, and be on the lookout for wildlife.

Upon arriving in camp, the guide will help you set up your tent, show you minimum-impact camping techniques and start

dinner.

If you still have extra energy, there are short hikes available, wild flowers to identify, or fishing in nearby waters. Or just

relax, sit back in one of our comfortable camp chairs and read a book until dinner is ready.

After dessert, you can kick back and watch the sun go down while your guide entertains you with stories of Glacier and its

folk heroes. Then it is a sound night of sleep in the comfort of your Sierra Design tent, snug in your warm fluffy sleeping bag

and comfortable Therm-A-Rest mattress.

The next morning you will awaken to a cup of fresh, custom-blended coffee and a hearty breakfast. After breaking camp,

we will be on the trail by 10 am. We typically like to hike 2 1/2 to 3 hours - stopping along the way for a cool drink of water or

to discuss a point of history or geology- before breaking for a leisurely lunch. After lunch, we will hike another two or three

hours through the pristine wilderness to our next camp.

Daily altitude gains vary with each trip, but they can range from a few hundred to several thousand feet. Altitude is not the

problem one encounters in a place like Colorado though. The highest elevation you can expect to attain is about 8,000 feet

with the valley floors at about 4,000 - 5,000 feet. You will, however, be in a true alpine environment.

Each trip will generally cross a major pass. Shorter trips sometimes establish a base camp with day hikes into the high

country. You can count on abundant wildflowers, from the cool shelter of the forest floor to the fragile alpine meadows

dressed in bear grass white. It's not uncommon to spot a mountain goat on a cliff above or a bighorn sheep grazing on the

grassy slopes beside you. Moose may be spotted watering near alpine ponds, as eagles soar in azure skies. If you are

really lucky, you may see a grizzly bear on a distant ridge.

Each day on the trail will bring new panoramas and breathtaking vistas. Camps are generally near streams or lakes, if you

like to fish. All backcountry camps offer the magnificent solitude of the wilderness, far from the hustle and bustle of Glacier's

more visited sites.

With over 700 miles of trails in the park, the choices for hikes are extensive! Hike approximately six to eight miles per day with

an average pack weight of 30 to 35 pounds.
