| flow through unspoiled forests. In 1919 the South Dakota State Legislature realized how precious this environment was and |
| designated 48,000 acres of land near the city of Custer as a state park to be names after the Major General who first led an |
| expedition through the area: George A. Custer. The result was seventy-three thousand acres of natural beauty and |
| adventure for you to enjoy. You will stay at the State Game Lodge. The gracious stone and wood lodge is set in a beautiful |
| mountain valley, surrounded by ponderosa pine forest. The lodge served as the "Summer White House" for President Calvin |
| Coolidge in 1927 and was visited by President Dwight D. Eisenhower for several days in 1952. It is now listed in the National |
| Register of Historic Places. |
| After check-in you will go on a Buffalo Safari Jeep Ride in search of wildlife. As you travel into the park’s back country you |
| will see a cornucopia of mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. You may encounter elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, |
| pronghorn, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, coyote, prairie dog, red crossbill, bluebirds, golden eagles, falcons, mountain lions, |
| and bobcats. But the highlight of the Safari will be the tatanka, or buffalo. These majestic creatures were saved from |
| near-extinction during the early 20th century and brought to the Custer Game Preserve. The herd at Custer State Park now |
| totals 1,400. From July to September, the mating season, roars from furious battles echo across the park’s open grassland. |
